Create a high-level conceptual model for your project document type's domain.
The model should represent the primary entities, attributes, and relationships in the bibliographic/documentary universe in which you are working.
A high-level conceptual model is concerned with:
The conceptual relationships between entities
The attributes of the entities
It is NOT concerned with:
How the relationships would be implemented in a database system
Normalization
Data types
You may base your model on Svenonius' set theoretic model, FRBR (see the modification of FRBR for scientific data), CIDOC, or indecs
(Or you can start from scratch)
Your model will include two parts.
One Part: Table of entities and their attributes.
A spreadsheet is probably the easiest way to do this.
First column: entity
Second column: example of each entity
Third column: attributes of each entity (one per row)
Fourth column: example of possible attribute value
Fifth column: relationships in which the entity is involved
Another Part: High-level conceptual diagram of your model.
You may create your model using any tools you have, use, or want to learn. See the list of diagramming tools on the wiki for some options. Or, you could even draw it by hand, scan it, and put it online for me to see… if you wanted to.
Diagram requirements:
Show only entities and their relationships in the diagram. Attributes are listed in the table.
Relationship lines should be labeled with text
Indicate directionality of relationships
Attempt to represent cardinality (one to many, many to many, etc.)
Do not attempt to represent entity-to-same-entity relationships like "Recipe is derived from Recipe." That comes later.
I do not care if you use a formal notation or not. However, you should include a key to explain your diagram and it should be consistent.
There is no perfect or one "right" model of a domain. There is also no absolutely complete model of a domain. I don't expect your models to be complete.Identify the major entities and relationships salient to the user groups/needs you are thinking about for the Objectives components.
This component is really asking you to formalize what you've already been thinking about and discussing in creating your collections.
Remember that this is a draft. I'll give you a score for your first try, but if you think about this further over the semester and revise, your final score will be higher.
